Project Aims and Objectives

Unique Dyslexic Get Creative project from Dyslexia Pathways CiC.

Dyslexia Pathways CiC: Being dyslexia positive.

Are you dyslexic or think you are dyslexic? It is well known that many dyslexics are also creative individuals.

Are you dyslexic and a creative individual or would like to find out more about being creative?

Are you interested in art, drawing, poetry, cooking, photography, music or creative in any way?

Then Unique Dyslexic Get Creative is for you. The objective of Unique Dyslexic Get Creative is to support, promote and celebrate the creative talents of dyslexic individuals across the full range of creative spectrum. We invite anyone who is dyslexic, or thinks they are dyslexic, to join the project and share their creative ideas here including:

actors, animators, sculptures, artists, comedians, chefs, dancers, dreamers, engineers, entrepreneurs, games designers, improvisers, information technology geeks, inventors, film makers, musicians, photographers, poets, song writers, story tellers, writers and visionaries.

You do not have to be diagnosed as dyslexic and we welcome dyspraxic, dyscalculic, AD(H)D and Aspergers individuals to share their creative talents on our facebook page in Unique Dyslexic Internet site. We welcome anyone from the neuro-diverse communities to join in and get involved with the Unique Dyslexic Project

Unique Dyslexic Get Creative ran 5 free to access workshops across Fife and areas surrounding Fife. Travel expenses and lunch as well as contributions towards any caring costs were provided.  All workshops included a short dyslexia awareness presentation on the social model of dyslexia and being dyslexia positive. These workshops are open to anyone who are dyslexic, think they are dyslexic, or to anyone who is interested in finding out more about being creative from beginner to expert.

Free dyslexia screenings were also available for people over the age of 16 attending the workshops. Indeed we screened 6 individuals using Quickscan all of which gave positive results.

Research indicates around 10% of the UK population are dyslexic. As a result many dyslexics feel isolated and there is no real tangible dyslexic community. Unique Dyslexic seeks to redress this by bringing them together in these workshops where they can develop their creative talents and share experiences of being dyslexic, form friendships and a peer support group.

Dyslexia Pathways CIC and  Unique Dyslexic Unique Dyslexic actively support and promote the social model of dyslexia and disability. We argue that dyslexia is an experience that arises out of natural human diversity on the one hand and a world on the other where the early learning of literacy, and good personal organisation and working memory is mistakenly used as a marker of ‘intelligence’. The problem here is seeing difference incorrectly as ‘deficit’. We believe that dyslexia is not a disability, that it is a difference that reflects the diversity inherent within humanity.

We invite anyone from the dyslexic and or neuro diverse communities to share their creative work and ideas either on the Unique Dyslexic Get Creative website and Facebook pages.  If you would like to find out more about the Unique Dyslexic Project, you are cordially invited to join the Unique Dyslexic Facebook page at the address below:
